While the first settlers arrived in the area in the 1850s just after California became a state, the city was not officially incorporated until 1997. Had residents not voted in favor of incorporation, the area would have been annexed as part of the city of Sacramento.
Citrus Heights has a busy retail and service economy anchored by the Sunrise Mall, which is newly remodeled and boasts more than 100 stores. The Mall is surrounded by the Sunrise Marketplace, which features big box retailers such as Best Buy and Target. In addition, it is located just ten miles from downtown Sacramento.
